About Us
- Since 1972 Metropolitan Open School has provided something unique - a school where children of multiple ages (K-8), races, religions, academic abilities, and economic backgrounds learn together.
- Children come to Metro Open School for many reasons -
- a desire to move at their own pace, whether that's slower or faster than others their age
- an opportunity to excel in math or science
- a comfort level afforded even easily distracted children by very small classes and interactive learning
- a desire for an environment which will nourish creativity and curiosity
- an opportunity for hands-on learning
- choices in their program and in their use of time
- INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING: At Metropolitan Open School each child's instruction is based on the child's particular needs, interests, and abilities. Reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, the arts, and physical education are taught with an emphasis on the child progressing at his or her own rate. We recognize that children learn best when they are ready to learn and when the process is interactive, interesting, and related to the world in which we live. Our low student-teacher ratio lets us tailor instruction that is appropriate for each child.
- THE JOY OF LEARNING: While children have specific goals, we believe in learning for its own sake - not as a graded or competitive exercise. We want children to learn how to learn and to love learning. The goal isn't to simply memorize words and rules, but to truly appreciate the concepts and processes that underlie their studies. It also means that the only cap put on a child's progress is that child's own ability and willingness to learn.
- MULTI AGE LEARNING: Metro Open School taps the very best that the one-room schoolhouse of yesteryear had to offer. Older children solidify their own knowledge and learn responsibility as they help younger children. A multi age environment gradually exposes younger children to what lies ahead. Metro Open School also has multiple rooms and study areas to support quiet learning and many activities. The size of our school encourages a familial atmosphere.
- A DIVERSE CURRICULUM: In addition to the basics, children receive instruction in French and/or Spanish and have the opportunity to participate in activities which have included cooking, sewing, photography, art, dance, drama, computer science, woodworking, African drumming and more. A field trip almost every week - frequently reinforcing classroom learning - is part of the broad academic experience.
- PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT: Metro Open School is a nonprofit school run by its parents and teachers. This parent-teacher partnership is also integral to the goal-setting and evaluation processes at Metro Open School. Parents assist with fund raising, field trips and other Metro Open School activities.
- THE CHILD: We firmly believe that childhood is a special state - not a period of imperfect adulthood. We cherish our children for what they are, rather than for what they might become. We accept them on their own terms. This genuine caring for a child as a human being leads us to an entirely different concept of education: one based on the child's needs rather than those of the school or society.
